Now in its seventh year, the hugely successful Summer Youth Project provides an opportunity for budding young stars in the local area to stage and perform a full-scale musical under expert professional supervision.
The Spa Pavilion Theatre, Felixstowe has today announced “The Wiz” as their Summer Youth Project for 2009.
Now in its seventh year, the increasingly popular Summer Youth Project provides an opportunity for budding young stars in the local area aged between 9 and 23 to stage and perform a full-scale musical under expert professional supervision.
Over a two week period the cast are put through an intensive rehearsal schedule, learning all stage techniques including performance, lighting, sound and music. In the second week the show is performed to the paying public in full costume.
Julie Howes, General Manager “Choosing a musical for the summer youth project is not an easy task and there are many hurdles to cross before a decision can be made. Whether or not a particular show is available to perform can be the most problematic then there are other considerations such as whether it will be suitable for the amount of young people involved (around 130) and whether or not we think it will be popular with audiences”
The Wiz is based on the well known story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This particular musical version is mysterious, lavish and fanciful - with Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz set to music in a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul.
Julie Howes “We have always had a great production team working on the project and this year will see the return of Rebecca Darcy as Director, Richard Healey as Musical Director and Suzie Lowe as Choreographer”
Julie went on to say “The important factors of any Summer Youth Project is that it covers all elements of musical theatre and that it is fun to do – I think the success of the previous six projects has confirmed just that”
